HORNETS PUT WRIGHT FOOT FORWARD IN SEASON OPENER
South Gibson County opened the season with a win for the first time in two seasons. Their 9-5 victory over Chester County was a great way to get the year started for the Hornets. "We did some things well, but we still have a lot of stuff that we have to work on and get corrected. Collectively we did a good job, from the guys that were on the field the whole game to the guys that were rooting in the dugout. Our energy was up and we fed off of that the entire game. It was not the prettiest game that we have played but we took our first step in the right direction last night." Coach Cates commented on the season opener victory. On the mound Jacob Wright started and got the victory for the Hornets on Monday night. Wright fired 5 innings, giving up 5 runs on 4 hits, while compiling 4 strikeouts. Coach Cates remarked on Jacob Wright's performance by saying, "Jacob did not have his best stuff last night, but he was pitching on guts and he wanted to win worse than the other team did. The fight and the drive that he has is comparable to that of Tyler England in recent years, and that is something that every good pitcher has to have." Hunter Sharrett closed the game down by getting a save while firing the final inning of the contest. He faced 3 batters, two were retired on strikeouts, and the one player who reached base was picked off. Offensively it was a collective effort for the Hornets and they had multiple players with two hits each. Hayden Lewis led the charge by going 2-3 with 4 Runs Batted In. His first at-bat resulted in a 2-run Home Run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. He followed up in the 4 inning with a 2-RBI double down the left field line. Similarly, Marshall Pearson, Walker Fraley, and Chandler Whitaker each had two singles a piece. The Hornets will square off in their 2nd and 3rd contests today against North Side High School at 4:00 and Fayette Ware at 6:00. Both of these games will be played at North Side High School. Thanks for supporting the Hornets and we will see you at the game!

SGC BASEBALL GETTING NATIONAL EXPOSURE THANKS TO AKADEMA
The South Gibson County Baseball Team is proud to have made a sponsorship through baseball/softball equipment manufacturer Akadema. The Hornets have partnered with them to get things this year such as practice shirts, bp jackets, helmets, batpacks, and even gloves for some of the players. "I have known the guys from Akadema for a long time, maybe even from the time that they opened their business. I have always been a big supporter of their glove line, and wore their gloves throughout high school and college. They make quality baseball equipment and we look forward to working with them a lot in the future as well." Coach Cates said when asked about why Akadema? This season the South Gibson County Baseball Team took their team photograph in their new Akadema batting practice jackets (picture can be seen on the "Roster" page) and Akadema put the photo on their website, as well as their Facebook page. We would like for everyone that has a chance to go and check it out at www.akademapro.com and scroll down to the bottom left of their home page. It will be located under their "Facebook Page Live" portion of the website. If you would like to check out their Facebook page it can be located at www.facebook.com/akadema. While you are at their site, check out their gear and support Akadema. Let's get ready for a fantastic year, it is only 3 days away!!

HORNETS GOOD FOR RUNNER UP IN BRADFORD WOOD BAT TOURNAMENT The 3rd annual Bradford Wood Bat Tournament took place this past week from June 5-8, and it proved to be the biggest and best quality tournament that they have put on to date. 12 local teams filled out the competition and it was divided up into 3 host sites, South Gibson being one of them. "I thought it was an honor to get to be a host site for this tournament. Our field keeps improving and people enjoy coming and playing at our field." Coach Cates remarked on the tournament. The 12 teams were divided into 3 pools in which they played round robin games Wednesday - Friday, with consolation games beginning on Saturday. The Hornets of South Gibson were able to come away with the #1 seed in their pool as they went 2-1 in their 3 pool play games and only allowing 3 runs to score in those games. Coach Cates talked about their standing after pool play by saying, "I was really encouraged by the things that we did. Obviously we pitched well and played good defense, and out of those 3 runs that were scored only one of them was earned, so I thought that our pitching staff did a fantastic job. It is also nice to be in the semi-finals of a tournament that you played host too, you definitely want to have a good showing there and I thought that we did that." McKenzie, Twin Cities from South Fulton, and Union City were the other 3 teams to advance to the championship rounds of the tournament on Saturday.
Twin Cities and Union City squared off in the first semi-final game with Twin Cities knocking off Union City 6-3 in 7 innings. McKenzie faced South Gibson for the second time in two days in the second semi-final game and this time the tides turned as South Gibson came out on top 5-3. Cates commented about that game saying, "They are a good ball club, but I think that we are a good club too. The name of the game was our pitcher was better than their pitcher today. My hat goes off to Hayden Scott, who threw a complete game. He has not pitched that deep in a game in a while and he was exhausted by the end, but he kept fighting and pounding the strikezone and it payed off for him. Logan Dyess also helped us out by hitting a huge 3 run homerun to tie the game. We were down early and he hit his first ever homerun in a huge spot for us with a wood bat. But that is just who he is, he wants to be the guy in big situations and he came through for us." With the win South Gibson turned right around to play Twin Cities for the championship.
This was not uncharted waters for the Hornets as they were runner-up in this tournament last season to Camden, who did not participate in the tournament this year. "It was nice to be back in this place again. You always want to be in a position where you can win it all and we did that, with more and better competition this year." Cates said. The Hornets elected to go with soon to be sophomore Alex Baker to start the game on the mound in the championship game. The move proved to be a good one as Baker delivered 4 strong innings and only allowing 3 runs to the talented Twin Cities team. Kody Gray relieved Baker and threw 2 more quality innings and giving up 1 run. Twin Cities threw their ace and soon to be collegiate players Ryan Prince from South Fulton and Mays from Lake County. Twin Cities was able to close the door in the final inning 4-3, but the Hornets had pressure and the tying and winning runs were in scoring position. Cates commented on the game, "It was definitely a David vs Goliath type feel at the beginning. Prince and Mays both played in the West TN senior all-star game at Pringles Park on Monday and Baker and Gray have not thrown one varsity inning during a high school regular season. I thought that our two did fantastic, they definitely stepped up to the challenge and gave us a really good shot to win. We had a chance there at the end too, with Chandler Whitaker on 3rd and Marshall Pearson on 2nd, and we just could not get it done at the plate to keep the game going. I think that it was good for our guys to see that they can play and compete against talented kids from around the area and I do not think that they will let this outcome happen again." The Hornets received the 2nd place trophy at the end of the game, but gave a strong showing throughout the entire tournament.
We wish the Hornets good luck throughout the rest of the summer and hope that you will come out and support them in their home games! The next home game is scheduled for 6/17 against North Side. That game will start at 6:00pm with a JV game to follow at 7:30.

TRYOUTS SET FOR JULY 22-23
The South Gibson County Hornet Baseball Team officially set their 2013-14 tryout dates for July 22 and July 23. Both of those days will begin at 6:30pm at Lion's Park in downtown Medina. Coach Cates is urging every male that is leaning towards wanting to play baseball to tryout for the team. All participants will need to bring their own cleats, glove, and hats. Baseballs and bats will be provided by the high school team at the tryout. These tryouts will be much like a showcase in which the athlete will be required to run, hit, throw, and play defense all in order to try and impress the coaches. There will be a scrimmage set for the 23rd in which all participants will get to show off their skills in a live game setting. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Coach Lin Cates via email at [email protected] or by phone at the school, (731)783-0999.

COVINGTON PUTS A CHARGE INTO SOUTH GIBSON
It was a rainy wet night for most of the ballgame Thursday night in Covington. The Hornets came out on fire, but the Chargers and the rain cooled off the Hornets from the second inning on. In the top of the first Hayden Lewis lined out to left field to lead off the game, but that was followed by a 1 out single by Corbin McDonald, then Austin Moore walked to put runners on first and second. Dyllan Walker entered the game to courtesy run for Moore. Marshall Pearson stepped into the box and ripped the second pitch he saw into the right center gap for a one out, one RBI double, leaving runners at second and third. Tyler England popped up in the infield and Luke Bray walked to load the bases. With the bases full Mitch Langley stepped into the box. On the third pitch of the at bat Mitch leaned into a pitch for an RBI. Dylan Moore would end the inning with a ground ball to the shortstop. Covington would answer by putting up 3 runs in the first to take a one run lead. The rest of the ballgame fell in similar ways as it was the Chargers that got the breaks to go their way and the Hornets to get burned by them. Carlos Williams, CF for Covington, was 3-5 at the plate with 4 RBI, 2 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases. "When you let their best player have a game like that it is nearly impossible to win. We allowed to control the game and they did. Our hats are off to them, they are a good ball team, and they battled the elements better than we did tonight." as Cates remarked on the ballgame. The Hornets will be back in action again Friday night against Haywood Co. That game will begin at 4pm and will be hosted by Milan.

HORNET SEASON SQUASHED BY HAYWOOD
South Gibson fought valiantly in their elimination game Sunday afternoon against the Haywood Tomcats in Union City. The Hornets found themselves in the losers bracket after a first round loss to Covington on Thursday night. Due to extensive rain Thursday night and all day Friday, the Hornets game was pushed to Sunday afternoon at 2:00. The Hornets came out and responded well to a beautiful day as they had 6 hits that resulted in 3 runs. But 3 proved to be not enough as the Tomcats squeaked out 4 on only 3 hits. Cates spoke later on the game saying, "It comes down to making plays. We had one inning that killed us, where we made two errors and allowed 3 runs, and that proved to be the turning point of the entire game." The Hornets pitched brilliantly as the combination between Jacob Wright and Tyler England combined for 9 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. "It was like we have done all year. I have been more than happy with our pitching staff, as we have limited opposing teams to under 3 earned runs a game." Cates commented about his pitching staff. The Hornets were led by Corbin McDonald who had 3 quality at bats during the game, and Marshall Pearson who had 2 quality at bats during the ballgame including a big 2 RBI double in the 4th inning. The days loss marks the end for 7 seniors that include Corbin McDonald, Tyler England, Jack Huff, Josh Keller, Mitch Langley, Dyllan Walker, and Tyler Wright. We would like to wish those 7 all the best in their endeavors after high school, and good luck next season to the Hornets that remain.

HUMBOLDT SPELLS WIN FOR LAST GAME OF SEASON
Senior night is always a special day for any baseball program, but especially for the players at South Gibson County. The Hornets have 7 seniors on the team, all of whom were in the starting line-up Thursday night. "I just think that it is a great way to show how much we appreciate those guys who have been a part of us for so long." Coach Cates remarked about senior night. Tyler England would take the mound for the final regular season game, which only seems fitting being that he is the career record holder for Games Started, Wins, ERA, Strikeouts, Complete Games, and Innings Pitched. "I could think of no better way than this for him to end his regular season like this. He has been "the guy" for us for the past two seasons, and when he is ready to go we want to give him the ball." The other senior starters in Thursday night's contest were Jack Huff - 3B, Josh Keller - LF, Mitch Langley - CF, Corbin McDonald - 2B, Dyllan Walker - RF, and Tyler Wright - DH. South Gibson allowed one run in the top of the first, a rarity for Tyler England, but answered with their own 11 run smack in the bottom of the first. It was smooth sailing from there as England tossed another scoreless inning and then turned it over to Graham Hopper who continued the streak and tossed 3 scoreless innings. A multitude of Hornets had big hits, as they would go on to win the ballgame 12-1. "I am proud of everyone of these guys on this team. We started out the year in a rough way, losing our first 6 games of the year. We have been playing catch-up ever since and our guys have not given in yet. I am excited everyday to get to go to war with this group of guys." Cates commented on ending the regular season. The Hornets of South Gibson drew a 3 seed in the district tournament which will put them traveling to play Covington (2 seed) in the first round of the playoffs. Good luck to the Hornets and go get those Chargers!

SWEEP MAKES IT EASIER TO SLEEP
Tuesday was yet another day where the Hornets were in a must win situation. The win Monday night just meant that they still had a fighting chance to be in a third place finish for the East side of the district. South Gibson did just that as they were able to clinch 3rd place with an 8-1 victory over Westview in Martin on Tuesday night. Coach Cates talked about the magnitude of the game, "We are in crunch time now, and we are treating this as a win or go home situation." The Hornet players responded well to this pressure as they came out of the gate on Tuesday and scored 4 in the first inning. Hayden Lewis got things rolling with a lead-off walk and Corbin McDonald followed with a single in between third and short. Austin Moore would execute a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, and Marshall Pearson would not disappoint as he singled up the middle to score both Hornet runners; he would advance to second on the throw home. Tyler England singled, Marshall Pearson scored on a past ball, and Luke Bray hit a sacrifice fly to score England. Those four runs proved to be plenty for Sophomore pitcher Jacob Wright who was spectacular Tuesday night, allowing 1 hit and throwing a complete game. Garrett Lashlee would also continue his hot streak as he came up with a huge 2RBI double to extend the lead late in the ballgame. "Garrett has done it twice in two games. Both nights he has seemed to find a way to put the last nail in the coffin." Cates remarked on Lashlee's performance. "We have started playing good baseball, which is what you have to do at this point in the season. It is all about who gets hot at the right time." The Hornets will host Liberty at home on Wednesday night, game time is set for 5:00. Thursday night at 5:00 will mark the Senior night for South Gibson as they host Humboldt in their final home game of the regular season.

SOUTH GIBSON TAKES GAME 1 OF MUST WIN SERIES
The South Gibson County Baseball Team entered into Monday holding on to the last place in the East side of the district. But there was a glimmer of hope. Two wins in the final two district games against Westview would place the Hornets in 3rd instead of 5th, which would eliminate a play in game. "These next two days are a must win for us. Our guys know what they have to do, now it is just time for them to come out and get the job done." Cates said about the up coming games. Cates went to his most consistent pitcher, Tyler England, for game one. England did not disappoint as he tossed all 7 innings, striking out 6, and only allowing 1 unearned run. "Tyler pitched great tonight. He did exactly what he is supposed to do when he gets the ball; go out and give us a quality start. He was attacking hitters tonight and was able to keep them off balance all night." Coach Cates responded about the pitching performance. Offensively it was a collective effort for the Hornets as a host of Hornets had hits. It was Garrett Lashlee who finally broke the game open when his triple with the bases loaded plated 3 Hornets that were on the bases. South Gibson squares off in another must win game Tuesday night as they take on the Chargers of Westview once again. The varsity game will be played at 5:00 with a jv game to follow.

HORNETS CAUGHT IN UNDERTOW OF TIDE
South Gibson County entered into Thursday night's contest looking to continue playing well and get the second win of the week. The Golden Tide of Peabody had other thoughts though as they beat the Hornets 5-1 in a 7 inning early game yesterday. Hayden Scott suffered the loss for the Hornets, giving up 5 runs over 7 innings of work and allowing 9 base hits. Hayden Lewis led the Hornets at the plate with a single and a double, and Austin Moore contributed with a Home Run of his own, but it was not enough to shake the Tide. Hayden Lewis led off the game for the Hornets with a single down the first baseline, but was picked off during McDonald's at bat, which resulted in a strikeout. Inning 2 for the Hornets also seemed promising as Marshall Pearson reached first base on an error by Peabody's shortstop. But, two strikeouts and a ground ball back to the pitcher silenced that rally starter. The third, fourth, and fifth innings went relatively easy for the Tide as no real damage was done by the South Gibson hitters, but the 6th inning proved to be a different story. Hayden Lewis reached first base to start off the inning due to a dropped fly ball by Trenton's center fielder. And after a long fly ball out to right field by Corbin McDonald, Hayden Lewis was picked off at first base due to a bad call. Austin Moore followed this by launching a solo-home-run which closed the gap 2-1. Peabody would get 3 runs in the 7th to put the game out of reach for the Hornets in the 7th. Coach Cates remarked after the game by saying, "We did not come ready to WIN today. I do believe that we came ready to play, but we did not come ready to win. There is a big difference, and it is the difference between a good team and a great team. I thought that we did some things well tonight though despite the loss. Austin Moore threw two runners out stealing (even though one was called safe), and we made some good plays defensively as well." The Hornets will try to get back in the win column on Friday as they travel to Liberty to take on the Crusaders. That game was supposed to start at 6, with a JV game at 4:15, but due to the weather we received Thursday night the JV game has been canceled and the Varsity game has been moved to 5.

WRIGHT PROVES TO BE RIGHT MOVE
Jacob Wright was the answer to the South Gibson question on Tuesday night. After a long hard-fought battle that ended in a loss on Monday night, the Hornets proved to have short-term memory loss and bounced back in impressive style Tuesday night. It was a pitching duel for the first half of the ballgame as the score was knotted at 0-0 going into the 5th inning. South Gibson opened the 5th inning with a single by Jacob Wright, followed by a strikeout by Dyllan Walker and then a one out walk to Hayden Lewis to put runners on first and second and Corbin McDonald loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Austin Moore, Marshall Pearson, and Tyler England proceeded to have RBI at bats to break the game open 3-0. That was all that Jacob Wright needed who went on to blank the Tomcats for the rest of the ballgame. "I thought that Jacob did a great job tonight. He definitely gave us a chance to win and that was exactly the type of pitching performance that we needed after Monday night." Cates remarked. Corbin McDonald followed up in the 7th inning leading off with a home run, his second of the year. The Hornets hope to pick right up where they left off when they host Trenton on Thursday. There is a JV game that is slated to start at 4:30 and a Varsity game that will start directly after at 6:30. Please come out and support the Hornets as they try to pull in another victory.

SGC LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO HAYWOOD
South Gibson County entered into week 6 on their bye week from district play. However, they decided to lock up with Haywood County, who is also on their bye week in the other side of the district. "I think that playing our bye weeks like this is a good thing. We do not treat this week like an off week from district and I know that Haywood does not either." Coach Cates remarked on playing another district team on a bye week. Monday's game proved to be an exciting one, going into extra innings. The only downfall was that the Hornets did not come out on top, losing 7-6. Tyler England started the game and threw 5 innings, allowing 6 runs and 4 earned runs. Luke Bray came in and threw the final 3 innings. He eventually ended up with the loss, allowing 1 unearned run and striking out 4. Corbin McDonald led the way at the plate for the Hornets, going 3-4 with two singles and a home run Tyler England and Marshall Pearson each had two hits a piece that resulted in 3 RBI's as well. Despite the better day at the plate for the entire Hornet team they were unable to get the victory. Entering the last 1/2 inning of the game, the Hornets were down 1 run and led off the inning with a Tyler England single and a Luke Bray walk, which gave the Hornets runners at first and second with no outs. Despite the early inning success, South Gibson was unable to get the big hit in the end to help themselves out. Cates talked about the end of the game, "This was an exciting night, that was full of energy, it just did not end the way that we would have liked it. We had multiple chances to win the ballgame and we could not get the big hit that we needed. But, as bad as we feel about tonight, I have no doubt that we will be ready to go against them tomorrow." The Hornets will square off in round two against Haywood Tuesday night at 6:30 in Brownsville.

HORNETS SINK VIKING'S SHIP
The Hornets added a notch in their win column Friday by defeating the Humboldt Vikings 12-1. Once the Hornets got a lead in the second inning, they did not look back and were able to route the Vikings in 5 innings. Hayden Scott picked up his first win of the season, tossing 3 innings and only allowing 1 run, he also caught the final two innings of the game. Luke Bray got the Hornets started in the second inning with a leadoff solo Home Run to right field, it was his first of the season. Bray also pitched the final two innings of the game and recorded 4 strikeouts. “Luke played really well tonight, and has been playing really well for the past two weeks. He has really been a spark that we have needed in our lineup.” Cates remarked. “Austin Moore also had a good day by going 2-3 with a single, double, and a walk and also 2 RBI.”

HORNETS GET SHOT DOWN BY PIONEERS
After putting a show on Monday night versus the Pioneers of Gibson County, the Hornets were shocked, or rather "shot down", by Gibson County in the second game of the district series Tuesday night. The final score rested at 5-1. The Hornets were down from the get-go, giving up one run in the first inning and two runs in the third inning. Jacob Wright was the starter for South Gibson, and he threw 4.1 innings allowing 4 earned runs and having 4 strikeouts. Hayden Scott followed by pitching the remainder 1.2 innings, allowing 1 earned run and having 3 strikeouts. "I thought that we pitched ok, well enough to win. Jacob and Hayden both were throwing strikes, and the only times that they were in trouble was when their pitches started to rise in the strike zone." Cates remarked about his pitching. At the plate the Hornets stranded 9 runners on base, 6 of whom were in scoring position. "It was a tough night for us. We had some chances to be right back in the mix of the game and we were unable to come up with the big hits that we needed." said Coach Cates. Marshall Pearson led the way for South Gibson by going 2-3 with two singles and scoring the lone run. The Hornets will be hard at work on Wednesday to get back on track for their late week schedule which features a home game against Liberty Tech on Thursday and an away game against Humboldt on Friday.

HORNETS BUST OUT AGAINST GIBSON COUNTY
South Gibson County had their first major break out game of the season. "It could not have come at a better time." said Coach Cates. "We desperately needed to win today's game to keep us alive in the district hunt. We put ourselves in a pretty big hole by starting off 0-4 in district play, and we needed to get back on track today." The warm weather may have helped the Hornets, as they exploded for 6 runs in the first, 1 run in the second, 6 runs in the third, and 1 run in the fourth. Cates talked about the hot start by saying, "We have been preaching to these guys about how important it is to have a good start to the game, and yesterday was the prime example. I hope that they will carry that over to tomorrow and the rest of the week as well." That was plenty of run support for starting pitcher Tyler England, who threw a complete game shutout, only allowing 2 hits and striking out 9. That was the first win of the season for England who is now 1-4. Tyler England, Luke Bray, and Garrett Lashlee each contributed with 2 hits a piece, and there were a slew of Hornets that had one hit or were on base. The Hornets look to continue their streak tomorrow at 4:30 in an away game against Gibson County. Come out and support the Hornets as they seek to get their second district win of the season.

HORNETS SQUEEZE ONE OUT AGAINST TRINITY
The South Gibson County Hornets shocked the Trinity Lions in the last inning of Saturday’s day game. The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two out single. “Going into the 7th inning we were down 1-0. But it was crazy how fast the game had gone. All of the pitchers were throwing strikes and with a low scoring game it went by quickly.” Cates remarked. Heading into the last inning, the Hornets were down to their last 3 outs. Marshall Pearson led off the inning with a ground ball out to second base. Tyler England singled with one out and was pinch run for by Josh Keller. Dylan Moore singled to left and Luke Bray followed with an RBI double to right field. With runners at second and third with one out, the Lions changed pitchers and Dyllan Walker came to the plate. On the second pitch of the at bat Walker squeezed in the winning run. “It was a great way to win a ballgame. Everyone is on cloud nine when that happens.” Coach Cates commented. Luke Bray finished the day with 3 hits, 1 RBI, 2 innings pitched and 1 Win. South Gibson will be at it again with another home game on Monday against cross county foe Gibson County. LAST INNING RALLY NOT ENOUGH FOR WIN
The Hornets of South Gibson were unable to sting the Bulldogs of Milan on Wednesday night in Medina. The final score was 7-5 when the last out was made. The Hornets got their sticks going in the 6th inning, but the 7 run deficit they were already in proved to be too much for the Hornets to get out of. Jacob Wright started for South Gibson and was relieved by Hayden Scott in the 5th inning, after giving up 5 runs. Hayden Scott entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs. Two runs scored before he got the 3rd out of the inning. Scott proceeded to pitch 2 scoreless innings to finish out the game. "I thought that Jacob Wright threw really well tonight. He did exactly what we asked him to do tonight, and he made some really close pitches that just did not go his way last night. But Hayden Scott did what we needed him to do also. We needed someone to come in and stop the bleeding and he stopped it completely." Coach Cates commented. South Gibson scratched across two runs in the 6th, the second of which came down to a play at the plate and Marshall Pearson was able to slide in safely. "That was a big momentum changer for us. If he would have been out on that play it would have devastated us, and taken the wind out of our sails." Cates said. The 7th inning provided some excitement for the Hornets and all that were in attendance as South Gibson scratched across 3 more runs and had runners at 1st and 3rd when Mitch Langley lined out to CF to end the ballgame. The Hornets proved to be just a little too late to start their rally. They will be back in action again Friday night in Medina to face Trinity at 6:30.

HORNETS UNABLE TO RATTLE THE DOGS CAGE
South Gibson County traveled to Milan for their second district contest week on Monday April 2nd. The Hornets were beaten by the Bulldogs of Milan 10-0 in 6 innings. The South Gibson bats were silenced by Caleb Powell on Monday night, as Powell threw 6 innings, allowing 0 runs and 0 hits. The only flaw was the one walk that was allowed in the 4th. Coach Cates commented on Caleb Powell's performance by saying, "He was really good last night. We ran into a good pitcher having a good day on the mound. He did not throw many balls at all. He was in the strike zone all day and we were unable to do anything to disrupt him. My hat is off to him, because he showed up and pitched really well." Tyler England took the mound for South Gibson and was charged with the loss. Cates talked about his team's performance saying, "We have to do a better job showing up on a daily basis. We did not compete very well last night either, and that makes for a long night. Mistakes are still killing us, and we have to do a better job with that. It is a mental thing, and we have to be better at that every day." The Hornets will get their chance for redemption on Wednesday night at 5:00 in downtown Medina.

HORNETS GO 2-2 OVER SPRING BREAK
It was not much of a break for the Hornets baseball team as they were able to get in 4 baseball games and had 3 rained out. The beginning of the week did not look promising as South Gibson fell twice to the hands of Crockett County. Tuesday Night the Hornets were beaten 5-1 in their first home game of the year. Tyler England took the loss despite throwing a complete game and striking out 10 Cavalier batters. Hayden Scott took the loss in the second ballgame on Wednesday night as the Hornets got beat 9-6. "Mistakes. That is still what is killing us in the end. We have made progress and are no longer making big mistakes, but we are now making small or mental mistakes. Both nights I thought that both teams were evenly matched, the difference was we made some mistakes and they did not. We have got to do a better job with that, and once we get that figured out the winning will take care of itself." Coach Cates said. Well it did not take long for the players to understand that as they came out and swept a Thursday double header. Trenton Peabody fell to the hands of Jacob Wright as he pitched a complete game, 7 inning, shutout. "It is hard to lose when the other team does not score." joked Coach Cates. "On a more serious note, I thought that Jacob pitched extremely well today. He kept the hitters off balance and he was able to do some little things to get himself out of jams." Marshall Pearson also set the tone in the first game by hitting a two run homerun in the top of the first inning. The Hornets would go on to win 6-0 in the early game. Directly after the Peabody game, the Hornets went to battle against Clarksburg. That proved to be a win early on in the ballgame. South Gibson jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and would proceed to win 11-0. Austin Moore was the winning pitcher and would go on to throw the second shut-out of the day. The Hornets get back to action Monday when they will host Milan in the second district series of the year.

6th INNING RALLY GIVES HORNETS THE VICTORY
The Hornets of South Gibson entered Thursday night's game coming off a late inning victory Wednesday night against McNairy County. Apparently they were still riding the high of their first win of the season because they stung the Indians of Montgomery Central 10-7 in another late inning thriller. The Hornets scored one in the first, two in the fourth, and rattled off seven in the sixth to win 10-5. "It was a whole team effort tonight. Everyone got in the ballgame and contributed to our win. I think that these guys are starting to believe that they can win. It would have been really easy to get down after the fifth, after losing the lead and getting down 4-3, but our guys wanted the last inning, they wanted to hit again because they knew that they could beat that team." Coach Cates said about Thursday night's victory. Marshall Pearson contributed in a big way, going 3-3 with a walk and also getting the save in the last inning. The Hornets will start their district play Monday, March 25, as they travel to Alamo to take on Crockett County. "They have become some sort of a rival to us. It has always been a battle every time we have played them, and we are looking forward to going toe to toe with them again." remarked Coach Cates.

SPLIT WEDNESDAY GIVES HORNETS FIRST WIN
The South Gibson County Hornets opened up the day Wednesday with the Hawks of Jackson South Side. Tyler England took the ball for the Hornets giving a solid performance, but also getting the loss. "It is tough right now. We feel like we have a chance to win every time that he steps on the mound, and so far both games that he has pitched in we have been shutout. It is hard for your ace to win when you don't score any runs." Coach Cates remarked. The only positive light that shown in the first game offensively was off the bat of Dylan Moore. Moore had two singles in his first two at bats and a well struck ball in his third at bat, just right at the right fielder. England ended the day on the mound throwing a complete 6 innings, allowing 1 earned run, and striking out 12 batters.
In the second game of the double header, the Hornets looked to sophomore Dylan Wright to give another solid pitching performance. Wright did not disappoint, throwing 6 innings and allowing 1 earned run, 2 runs total. "Jacob did exactly what we needed him to do. He went out to the mound and gave us a quality start and kept us in the ball game until we could finally break it open." said Coach Cates. That was Jacob Wright's first high school varsity win, as well as the first win of the season for the Hornets. Dylan Moore continued to provide a hot bat for the Hornets, laying down a sacrifice bunt in the 5th inning and coming up with a huge two RBI double in the 6th. The Hornets will try their hand again on Thursday night against Montgomery Central. That game will be hosted by South Side and played at 6:00 pm.

JCS INCHES ONE OUT AGAINST THE HORNETS
The South Gibson County Hornets lost a heart breaker Tuesday night against the Eagles of Jackson Christian School. The Hornets were beat 5-2 in 6 innings by the Eagles. "The score does not actually represent the game." said Cates. "We ran ourselves out of a couple of innings, and we actually had them on their heels in the 5th and 6th inning." The Hornets left the 5th with a runner stranded and a player thrown out at 3rd for the 2nd out of the inning. "We really started to gain momentum and they made plays when the pressure was on, and we did not capitalize when the pressure was on us." We also ended the 6th with grounding into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning. "Our team is getting closer and closer to where we need to be, just have a few more kinks to work out." replied Cates after the loss. Hayden Scott was the losing pitcher for the Hornets, but he gave a gutsy performance throwing 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, and striking out 7 against a solid offensive team in JCS. The South Gibson County Hornets will be back in action with a double header on Wednesday against South Side and McNairy Central.

HORNETS END THE WEEK AT 0-4
Despite playing better than the previous two days, the Hornets were beaten in the last inning again, this time at the hands of the Adamsville Cardinals. Austin Moore was the starting/losing pitcher in last night's contest. Moore had a very solid night, pitching 5 innings, striking out 8, and only allowing 3 walks. He did give up 4 runs in the 5 innings, 2 coming in the 5th, which was the final blow for the Hornets. "I thought that we played better tonight and actually competed tonight. I am obviously not happy with how our week turned out and we have a lot of work to do Thursday - Saturday. You can guarantee that we are not going to have easy days for the rest of the week, we have to get a lot better." Coach Cates remarked. The upcoming week is another long one for South Gibson County as they play 5 games in 4 days. Come help the Hornets get back on track as they play Dyersburg Monday night at Pringles Park in Jackson.

HORNETS DROP A PAIR
Lions, Tigers, and Bears oh my........ Well it was just a story of Lions and Tigers Tuesday night that got the best of the South Gibson County Hornets. The Hornets lost a heart breaker to Trinity in the last inning and then again to Bolivar in the last inning. The Hornets took an early lead against the Lions of TCA, jumping out 3-0 in the first inning. Both teams battled all day and going into the final inning the Hornets were holding on to a 3-1 lead. A costly error and some timely well placed hitting allowed the Lions to come away with the victory 4-3. In the nightcap, the Hornets once again had a superb pitching performance, this time by the hands of Jacob Wright. The Hornets finally took the lead when they plated one run in the 4th inning, but Bolivar answered with their own run in the bottom of the 4th. The Hornets failed to score in the 5th but gave themselves a chance to win by plating 2 runs in the 6th. Once again the Hornets were plagued by errors, making 4 errors in a row to start the inning. The Tigers scored 5 runs in the inning and the game was ended due to time limit after that. Coach Cates commented, "We are struggling right now. I am not sure if it is a confidence thing or what, but rest assured we will get it figured out. Hats are off to our pitchers because they have thrown fantastic for the first 3 games of the season and they have nothing to show for it." They Hornets get a chance for redemption Wednesday night at 6:30 vs. Adamsville. That game will be played at North Side High School.

HORNETS DROP OPENER TO HARDIN CO.
The South Gibson County Hornets were stung Monday night at the hands of the Hardin County Tigers. The final score was 7-0 in favor of Hardin County. The hornets were plagued by errors from the get go and it cost them the game. "We wanted our guys to come out fired up, and they did that. We should have had at least one run in the first and possibly two. But it kills your moral when you have success in the first and then the other teams answers with putting a 5 spot on the board." Coach Cates said. "I thought that we did some things well tonight and we have to keep our spirits high. This game is kind of deceiving because Tyler England was the best pitcher at the park last night. He threw 6 innings, had 8 strikeouts and only allowed 1 earned run, and our score does not show that. Baseball Team Back In Action
The long anticipated start date for the 2013 baseball season is now upon us. The Hornets were able to have their first day of actual practice on February 11th. "It has been refreshing to get back out on the baseball field. The weather has not allowed us to be out there everyday like we would have hoped for, but we have had really good days of practice the days that we are able to be outside." said Coach Cates. So far the Hornets have been able to scrimmage 2 separate days and the coaches have been pleased with what they have seen. "It is good to see live pitching again and I think that excites our hitters. I have been impressed with what we have seen so far. Still have some things to work on, but for the first two intrasquads it has been really good." remarked Coach Cates. Coach Dunn commented by saying, "It is early, and we still have some guys that we are counting on that need to start hitting, but defensively we have not made a lot of errors, and we have not struck out a bunch at the plate either." The Hornets will continue to work hard even though the forecast is not helping matters right now, and they are looking towards another scrimmage sometime in the near future.

SGC BASEBALL FUNDRAISER - FANCLOTH
The Hornet Baseball team will begin their first major fundraiser of the year today. They will be selling apparel from FanCloth, the same apparel company that was used for last year's fundraiser. "This company has been really easy to work with and they produce a good product as well. We also wanted to get apparel out to those people in the school that were involved in other sports, or not involved in a sport at all. That is why you will see on our picture below, none of the items are sport specific, we just want to be school specific and make sure that everyone in our school has the opportunity to get some clothes that represent our school for a good price." Cates said. If you are interested in purchasing any of these items, please contact Coach Lin Cates. Thanks for your help to our program, and we look forward to seeing you in some South Gibson County gear!

HORNETS BEGIN OFF-SEASON TRAINING
The South Gibson County Hornets have officially began their off-season training. This will consist of throwing, weightlifting, and conditioning. The Hornets lost a good group of seniors so they will be looking to bounce back and get a head start on the competition. Coach Cates said, "We are excited to get back going again. I wish that we could do more baseball related drills/exercises, but the TSSAA has rules against that. I am anxious to see our new team at work and how they are going to respond without our seniors from last year. With having a new look and spots to fill at the varsity level, we have work to do. But, I have all the confidence in the world in our guys and I know they will push themselves to get ready for the upcoming year." Cates also talked about consistency and so they are going to get started everyday around 3:05 and will be done around 5. This is also a chance for the team to get to know Coach Mark Dunn, who will also be assisting in the fall with throwing, conditioning, and weightlifting.

2013 HORNET ROSTER REVEALED
The 2012-2013 Hornet roster has been set, and it is safe to say that there will be some new faces among the South Gibson County baseball team. South Gibson lost their first set of seniors last season. Those included Avery Phillips, Cameron Meador, C.J. Jackson, Slater McLean, Tyler Stephenson, and Drew Bradford. Coach Cates talked about the new look, "It's different for sure. We have been so used to having the same players every year, and to lose that group of guys is going to be tough. But, on the flip side of things, we are excited about our upcoming season. We have alot of players that are eager to to get to work and push us towards another winning season." Another big change will be that of the coaching staff. Bryce King, assistant coach for the first 3 years of the program, has taken a new job and will not be back to coach the Hornets in 2013. "It was hard to see him leave, and I know that it was a hard decision for him to make also. We are happy for him and wish him the best of luck." Cates said, "We have added a new assistant coach in Mark Dunn. Dunn graduated from Gibson County High School and went on to play baseball at Jackson State and Lambuth. He is a great addition to our staff, and I am excited for him to work with our guys and to watch our team and program grow." The South Gibson County Hornets have officially began their off-season training.

Bryce King, assistant coach for the first 3 years of the program, has taken a new job and will not be back to coach the Hornets in 2013. 2010 - 2012 NEWS
BASEBALL TEAM DROPS PAIR OF DISTRICT GAMES TO CROCKETT CO.
The Hornets of South Gibson County hit a road block on Monday and Tuesday, ending their 5 game winning streak and sending them on a two game skid. On Monday night the Hornets were beaten in Crockett Co. and then on Tuesday at home to Crockett Co. "We were in both games and we battled hard both days. We just had some stuff that did not go our way and they did." said Coach Cates.
In game one on Monday, Tyler England took the hill to throw for the Hornets. "Tyler has been our hottest pitcher so far and we were not hesitant to roll him out there for opening day of the district season." Coach Cates remarked. Tyler threw 5 innings giving up 5 runs but only 3 earned runs. Hayden Scott came on to relieve him. Colton Kail threw a complete game for the Cavaliers and held the Hornets at by bay, only allowing them to score twice. Cates commented on the game by saying, "Colton Kail threw a great game and we tip our cap to him. We have to do a better job of controlling the parts of the game that we can control, we let it get away from us a couple of times tonight." Avery Phillips led the way at the plate by going 1-3 but having 2 quality at bats.
Tuesday's nightcap would round up the district play for the week and it was a fight to the finish. Avery Phillips was the starting pitcher in the ballgame and threw 5 strong innings allowing 4 earned runs. "Avery did what he always does. He gave us a chance to win, and gave a good chance tonight and we blew it for him." Cates said. The Hornets had leads multiple times during the coarse of the game and allowed the Cavaliers to climb back in. South Gibson County had the lead going into the 7th inning and Crockett County scored 3 unearned runs to take a 2 run lead and were able to stall the Hornets in the bottom half of the 7th. Cates commented after the game saying, "We are not happy right now. We feel like we should have won tonight and should have had a better chance to win last night. I am proud of our guys for battling and competing and never giving up and it is going to pay off in the long run for us."
The Hornets will put it all to the test again on Wednesday as they have a double header facing Lexington at 5:45 and Northside at 8.

SGC PULLS THROUGH DESPITE EARLY DEFICIT
South Gibson County traveled to Dyersburg for a single game today and it turned into an exciting one. Avery Phillips was the starting pitcher today and he got off with a no-decision. After going 1,2,3 in the bottom half of the first inning Phillips struggled and could not make it through the second, giving up 4 runs on 2 hits. Tyler England proceeded to come in and allowed one more run, but was very good after that. England threw 5 more innings without giving up a run. Coach Cates remarked about Tyler's play by saying, "Confidence. Every time that he gets in the ballgame he believes that he is going to win. It was contagious tonight and it showed." In the top of the 3rd inning the Hornets scored 6 runs on 6 hits. "I challenged them in between innings. That was the first type of adversity that we had seen this year, and they proved that they were up to the challenge." Cates said. During that inning the Hornets put together a run of 5 straight hits, including back to back RBI doubles produced by Phillips and Moore. South Gibson County would go on to win 7-5 to remain perfect this season at 4-0. Their next contest will be against the Vikings of Humboldt on Thursday at 5 in Humboldt and then again on Friday at 5 in Medina. Make sure to come out and support the Hornets!

HORNETS START SEASON WITH A TWIST
Opening day started today 3/13/12 with a twist, or better yet, a twist-er. The hornets traveled to play the Union City Tornadoes, who have one of the nicest facilities in West Tennessee. "You could not have asked for anything better. We were on a great looking field, it was about 75 degrees outside, and it was opening day of baseball season." Cates said. The Junior Varsity team played first and they came out on top 3-2 in 5 innings against the Tornadoes. Once the JV game ended the Varsity teams locked horns at 6:30. The story for the Hornets Tuesday night was Tyler England, who missed the 2010-2011 season with a broken ankle. Cates said, "He told me that he was a little bit nervous but it was a nervous excited and that he had been waiting for this for 2 years." Tyler proceeded to throw a complete game, giving up 4 runs but winning 8-4. He also helped himself out at the plate by going 3-4 with 3 RBI. "Tyler really showed out tonight and that is what we needed. Someone to come out and have a big night." "It is funny how that happens, because he was an energy boost to the whole team. He took us to another level tonight." Cates said. With the Hornets 1-0, they will travel to McKenzie to take on the Rebels on Wednesday 3/14/12. Junior Varsity will be played at 4:30 and Varsity will play at 6:30. We hope that you can come out and support the Hornets!

OPENING WEEK SCHEDULE CHANGES
The Hornets of South Gibson County are set to open their season up at home for the first three games of the season. The games scheduled for March 12, 13, and 15 are being changed. Due to renovations not being 100% ready, the Hornets will have to swap and play their first handful of games on the road. McKenzie's game scheduled for the 12th is being moved to Wednesday March 14. Union City and West Carroll, which are scheduled for Tuesday 13th and Thursday 15th will still be played on those days, they will just be played in Union City and Atwood. Coach Cates said, "It's not ideal. We were really hoping that we would be able to open up and play our first three games at home. But, due to our renovations and the weather that we are currently getting, there is just no way that we would be able to have everything completed like it needs to be by this coming Monday. I have been impressed with how fast the work has actually been done and for a while we were looking like it was going to happen. We are still excited about our season and the fact that we are going to have a nice new addition to our field." The Hornets plan on opening up and unveiling their new stadium on March 23 against Humboldt. HORNETS SHOW SIGNS OF PROMISE IN PLAY DAY
The South Gibson County High School Baseball Team opened their 2012 season up with a play day hosted by Liberty Tech High School in Jackson, TN. This scrimmage day, much like a jamboree in football, involved SGC, Dyersburg, USJ, and Crockett County high schools. The hornets opened the day up with Dyersburg at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 3. Tyler England was the starting pitcher and threw three scoreless innings. The hits were limited for the Hornets but there were some positives from the game. "I thought that for the most part we pitched really well against Dyersburg, and although we could have hit better we did some stuff well there too. We have been preaching to our guys that Quality At-Bats is what really matters. We are looking to get our guys in a mindset and they are starting to figure that out." Cates said after the game. Next up was district foe Crockett County. The players of South Gibson County are already familiar with the Cavaliers as they split with them during the regular season last year. C.J. Jackson started for the Hornets on the mound, followed by Cameron Meador and Luke Bray. Cates said about the game, "I thought that defensively and pitching was excellent during this game. C.J. had a rough couple of pitches to begin with but once he settled down and got in the groove it set the tone for all of our pitchers. We needed to do a better job at competing at the plate during this game. That is what got us in the end." Cameron Meador and Luke Bray followed up throwing three scoreless innings after Jackson's two innings of work. SGC finished up with the USJ Bruins. Avery Phillips started this game and was followed up by Austin Moore. Combined they gave up 2 total runs, 1 run a piece. "Overall today I thought that we did a good job and showed a lot of promise for the upcoming season. No one plays perfect in these scrimmages and we knew that going into it. We had a lot of positives happen and it is something that excites me for the season ahead of us." Cates said. The Hornets will open up with the Rebels of McKenzie on March 12.

BASEBALL TEAM GETS HELP FROM DISTRICT/CITY FOR MUCH NEEDED RENOVATION
It is an exciting time for the SGC baseball team as they prepare to do some much needed renovation to their baseball field, which is located in downtown Medina. The improvement plans call for renewing the dugout and backstop by replacing the fenced backstop with a 3ft tall cinder block wall running from dugout to dugout along with a 30ft high net that will also stretch from dugout to dugout. Along with the backstop being cinder blocked, the dugouts will also be cinder blocked and an additional 20ft will be added on to the home dugout. The Gibson County Special School District has contributed with paying the labor end of this project and the City of Medina has made a donation to the program that will aid in the cost of material. Coach Cates has talked about the project after the City of Medina Board Meeting, which was held Monday night. "When this idea was first being entertained it was like a dream that we thought would be nice, but that we knew would be a project for years down the road. But through the support of the district and the City of Medina this dream is being made a reality." Cates said. It is also an exciting time because the project should be completed before the 2011-2012 season, which is also the first season for South Gibson County to have a senior class. "These seniors have had an extremely special experience in the life of this school. Academically they will be the first to graduate from South Gibson County and they have grown with the school. Athletically they have been a part of the first wins in all of the sports here at the school, as well as the unveiling of a brand new football stadium. With this renovation being done to the baseball facility, that is just one more special thing for these seniors to remember from their high school career." Cates said. On behalf of the SGC baseball team we would like to thank the Gibson County Special School District, City of Medina, as well as the Medina Baseball Association for making this dream become a reality. You can also go to the "Photos" tab on the left hand side of your screen for picture updates on the before - during - and after of the renovation project.

EASTER SLAM SCHEDULE CHANGE
The 2012 Easter Slam Tournament schedule has been changed. Originally the Hornets were supposed to lock horns with McKenzie and Milan in the round robin play with games on Friday promised and games on Saturday if they were to win on Friday. Because of some teams dropping out of the Tournament the brackets have had to be switched around and the SGC baseball team was one of the teams affected. Now the SGC Hornets will be matched up against Westview on April 5th, with Dresden and Trenton to follow on April 6th. "We knew that we wanted to be in this tournament again, so we have tried to be as flexible as possible so that we can make this tournament a success." Coach Cates said. If South Gibson wins their pool, they will play in the championship rounds on Saturday at Humbolt. The round robin pool play games for the Hornets will be played at Trenton High School. BASEBALL PLAYERS STANDING OUT ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD
The football program at South Gibson County is off to a historic start with a 4-1 record after the first 5 weeks of high school football and with winning their first 4 varsity football games in school history. Like many other high schools across Tennessee, athletes that play more than one sport are frequent and at South Gibson County the story is the same. Two athletes that are football/baseball players are making a name for themselves and being staples on the football team. Drew Bradford, who was player of the week two weeks ago against Trinity Christian Academy, and Marshall Pearson are two players whose numbers are called frequently on Friday nights.
Drew Bradford, a senior for the Hornets, has really stepped up this year and is starting on both sides of the ball and on special teams. "Drew has played well and has been one reason for our success this year," said Coach Stidham. Drew is playing as a slot back on offense and as a defensive back on defense. Due to some injuries, Drew has also stepped up and filled in nicely as the 2nd kick returner on special teams. Marshall Pearson, a sophomore for the Hornets, has also been a key to success at the halfway point of the season. Marshall has gotten significant playing time at linebacker on defense this year and was able to fill some holes for the Hornet's defense. Coach Fischel, defensive coordinator, said, "Marshall is a very solid football player and makes a case to be on the field every Friday night. He has the potential to be a very good football player, and if he continues to get better every week like he has been doing, he will make a case to be on the field at all times on defense."
Other baseball players that are playing roles in the success of the football team are Austin Moore, Dyllan Walker, Garrett Lashlee, Gray Johns, Hayden Scott, Mitch Langley, Slater McLean, and Tyler Wright. For updates on the football team and a full schedule you can go to www.sgchsfootball.com.

HORNETS BEGIN THEIR 2011-2012 FALL WORKOUTS
The South Gibson County Hornet baseball team began their fall workout program this past Monday 8-22-2011. They will be working out 5 days a week; workouts will include weight lifting, a throwing program, and conditioning. "We are ready to begin doing baseball stuff. Our guys worked really hard last year and were able to see the improvements, so they are eager to get started this year" said Cates. The Hornets have 10 players that are not playing another sport for South Gibson County and those are the players that are going through the workout period at this point in time. The team is gearing up to enter and compete in District 13AA and they seem aware of what they need to do. Coach Cates said, "I am proud of our seniors because you can tell that they are working in order to compete for something special. They are not interested in being common; they are adamant about working to establish a winning tradition here at South Gibson." 2012 SCHEDULE COMPLETED AND LOCKED IN PLACE
Today the South Gibson County baseball team unveiled the completed 2012 schedule. The Hornets have changed districts and will now be a part of District 13AA, so the district opponents will have different faces. The Hornets are part of the sub-district that includes Gibson County, Milan, Crockett County, and Covington. On the opposing side of the district are Haywood County, Ripley, Dyersburg, Westview, and Obion County. Some noteable games that the Hornets will be playing that are outside of their sub-district include Dyersburg, Union City, Liberty Tech, and Trinity. Along with the district and non-district games the SGC Hornets with be competing in two tournaments this year: the Easter Slam (which they competed in last year) and the Sports Plus Invitational. The opponents have yet to be determined for the two tournaments. Coach Cates said, "We have a tough road this year. The competition that we are playing this upcoming year is going to be better than it was last year, but we are planning on being better than we were last year too. Playing tough competition all year is going to prepare us for what we will be facing in the District Tournament and hopefully farther." The Hornets have also scheduled 17 Junior Varsity games. "We think that JV is a very important aspect of our program. It is training our younger players, so that they will be ready to step into roles when their time comes and their number is called." The Hornets begin their regular season action on March 12, and look forward to seeing everyone out there!

HORNETS HAVE 2 DAY TRYOUT ON JULY 18TH AND 19TH
The South Gibson County baseball team had open tryouts the previous two days. There were 47 participants that tried out for a spot on the team, but only 30 were kept. "This was a hard tryout for us, mainly because we did not lose anyone last season, so we did not have roster spots to fill." said Coach Cates. Cates was pleased with the turnout and with the effort that was given on both days. Coach Cates said, "All of the players came out and worked hard and made our decision really tough. We kept a few more players than we had planned on, but when it got down to it, we did not feel like we could condense the number down any farther." "The good thing about our tryout is that the majority of players that we kept were freshmen, and they have a lot of time to grow and will see significant time as members of the Junior Varsity team." Coach Cates and Coach King would like to continue to see the drive and hard work that players are giving because that is what makes a solid program.

HORNETS MAKE AN EARLY EXIT IN BRADFORD WOOD BAT TOURNAMENT
The South Gibson County baseball summer league team, better known as the Walker Imaging Hornets, made an early exit in the single elimination Bradford Wood Bat Tournament. After sweeping the first 3 games of the round robin portion and only giving up 4 runs, the Hornets were put out in the first game of the elimination round. Camden, a team that the Hornets had beaten two days prior, took the lead in the 4th inning and refused to give it back. "We had some things go against us in this tournament. Playing on Father's Day is not really what we wanted, and we were missing some of our team because of it. Camden did come out and play solid and they deserved to beat us on that day." Cates said. The Hornets have had a productive summer and continue to get better in preparation for the 2012 jump into AA baseball.

SGC ENDS SEASON WITH A LOSS TO ADAMSVILLE IN THE DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
The South Gibson County Hornets season came to an end with a loss to Adamsville in the 15A District Tournament. The Hornets jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning by pushing a run across. "We did what we wanted to do. Our goal was to come out and bring the fight to them. We had sat around and gotten punched first in the majority of our ballgames and we made a decision that we wanted to come out and deliver the first blow." said Cates. After having a one, two, three inning with Adamsville in the bottom of the first, the Hornets came back to the plate ready to do some more damage but ended the inning with a runner stranded at 2B. Adamsville came across with a run in the bottom of the 2nd, but then the Hornets came fighting back with two more runs of their own in the top of the 3rd inning. Coach Cates said, "I was very proud and impressed with our team early on. We battled and battled and refused to give up." In the bottom of the 3rd and 4th inning the wheels came off for the Hornets, allowing Adamsville to score 4 runs in each inning. The Hornets were done with their scoring for the night and were unable to get back into a position to win. Cates commented, "We had been battling injuries for the second half of the season and tonight was a night that it caught up with us. Hayden Scott reinjured his side and we were forced to make a change, and when we got into a little bit of trouble we did not have any more pitching to help us out." "I am proud of our guys and the season that we have had. We are not where we want to be as a team or as a program yet, but this year I felt like we took strides in the right direction and are on our way to being in the position that we want to be." said Cates. The South Gibson County Hornets finished the year with an 11-16-1 record. They have some areas to grow in and we are anxious to see what is in store for the SGC Baseball team in the upcoming season.

You can check out the new up to date schedule on our Schedule tab to the left or by clicking on this link 2011-2012 Baseball Schedule.
